Introduction: Professional dancers are the top athletes among performing artists. As a result of this stress acute injuries and/ or chronic afflictions frequently occur. Even minor physical ’deficits’ may result in severe limitations to work and lead to a temporary or even permanent occupational disability. Therefore, the prevention of injuries is of great significance. To be able to initiate adequate and practicable preventive measures, it is decisive to increase the knowledge on health hazards in professional dance. Aim of this study is to precisely specify occupational accidents Methods: Basis for the evaluation are accident reports (DAB, F1000) of six Berlin theatres of the Berlin State Accident Insurance (UKB) as well as case records of all Berlin State Theatres over a period of 11 years (n=1099, m: 569, w: 530). Evaluation and descriptive statistics were conducted by with Excel 2007 and PASW Statistics 18. Results: The lower extremity is the most affected region (m: 61.8%; w: 69.9%) whereas distortions (m: 25.9%, w: 27.2%) and muscular strains (m: 23.8%, w: 25.9%) are the most frequent types of injuries in either sex. There is an increase of occupational accidents in the final quarter (31.2%) and in the first four years after initial employment (51.8%). Exogenous and endogenous factors can be defined as causes for occupational accidents. Discussion: There are numerous aspects as to acute injuries that allow initial steps toward a preventative approach with the necessary gender-specific consideration. Diverse significant occupational hazards may be presented in professional dance. Practicable preventive measures are only possible by the cooperation of all professional groups in dance
